Obituary for
Daniel "Dan" Christie
Christie, Daniel James
Railroader, Writer, Raconteur, a true Renaissance Man
June 28, 1950 - May 3, 2017
Dan died as he wished, at home watching the Blue Jays with his family by his side. Dan moved to Port Hope in 1991 and didn't waste any time getting involved with his community. With his top hat & tails, "Ganny Danny" spent several years as mascot for Float Your Fanny. Dan joined the Port Hope Evening Guide Advisory Committee and when the paper closed, he and some friends in town started their own paper (The Town Crier). Dan believed strongly in freedom of speech and that one should question everything they read. He ran for council twice and although he was defeated, he continued to challenge and advocate for what he thought was best for the community. Dan was a key member of the committee to keep the Port Hope Police and assisted in saving the existing fire stations for the Port Hope Fire Department. Despite his cancer diagnosis 5 years ago, he continued to hold court at the Winchester Arms where he would enjoy a pint (or several), debate politics, tell a story and share a laugh with whomever was lucky enough to be there.
Dan is predeceased by his son David, survived by his wife Marnie and daughters Robyn (Steve) and Danielle (Alex).
Per Dan's wishes: cremation has taken place, no service to be held and donations may be made to the R.S. McLaughlin Durham Regional Cancer Centre.
