In the early morning of October 28, 2017, at Northumberland Hills Hospital in Cobourg, Ontario, Edith Ellen Ervena Millington (Hamilton) passed away peacefully in her 99th year.
Ervena was predeceased by her husband Norman, son John and grandson Scott (Jiang). She leaves behind sons James (Diane) and Douglas (Kathryn Bigsby), grandchildren Jonathan, Anna, William, Chris (Laurie) and Graeme (Amy),Bria Knowles(Michael) Dayton Ball(Lauren); great-grandchildren Mandela, Mulan, Austin,Zachary, Owen, Teddy, Dora, Geneva, Roger, Emmett, Oliver, Keenan,and great-great-grandchild Shamus.
Ervena Hamilton was born and raised in St. Marys, a close-knit rural Ontario community whose old-world values moulded in her the lifelong qualities of optimism and sincerity. Ervena was blessed with loving parents and despite being an only child enjoyed an extensive network of aunts, uncles and cousins as well as a large and energetic circle of local friends. Throughout her life St. Marys remained a frequent holiday destination and a constant grounding source of comforting memories.
Ervena met her life’s partner, Norm, while working and studying in nearby London. The young couple married and moved to Hamilton to be closer to Norm’s military posting at Mt. Hope. Ervena bore her first child shortly after Norm began what turned into a three year absence overseas with YMCA War Services. Two more sons were born during Norm’s first post-war YMCA posting in Montreal. Norm’s subsequent career moves took Ervena to Chatham, Toronto and Sarnia before her final move to assisted living in Port Hope where eldest son Jim and his wife Diane were nearby for ready support.
Ervena was gifted with a strong sense of purpose, a lively sense of humour and, until the very end, hearty good health, all of which enabled her to enjoy the gifts and overcome the setbacks of a long and active life.
She was a dedicated mother and a resourceful homemaker. Her self-proclaimed “squeaking eyeballs” were so adept at finding bargains and stretching the modest means of a “Y” salary that she and Norm were able to retire comfortably and travel extensively. Like many women of her generation, Ervena was skilled with a sewing machine, saving on family clothing costs and, in the lean years, fashioning many of her own garments. She was also accomplished at leathercraft, metal etching and furniture renovation, and her rug hookings are the prized possessions of her children and grandchildren.
A celebration of her life will be held at The Ross Funeral Chapel, Port Hope on Friday November 10th, 2017 at 11 a.m.
According to Ervena’s wishes, her ashes will be interred in St. Marys, Ontario beside those of her parents, Norm and her son John.
Memorial donations in Ervena’s memory may be made to The Northumberland Hills Hospital Foundation or to The Canadian Breast Cancer Society.
