Elizabeth Mae (Libby) Orovan died peacefully with her close friends in attendance at Northumberland Hills Hospital after a brief illness on June 25, 2025, one day after her 77th birthday. Libby was born on June 24, 1948 in Brockville, Ontario as the third child of Albert and Violet Orovan. She was predeceased by her older sister Sylvia, who died in infancy, and both her parents. She is survived by her older brother William, (Janice) and nephews Cameron, (Gio), Paul (Olya), Patrick (Kaitlyn), and Sharon Orovan Johnston and Mary Orovan (Harry) from New York City. Libby grew up in Brockville where she attended Westminster Elementary School and later Thousand Islands Secondary School, where she was voted female athlete of the year in 1963. She subsequently graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Libby’s first career as an Elementary School teacher in Burlington, Ontario was relatively short and she soon moved on to a long, successful career with Toronto Dominion Bank, culminating in her being Manager of Corporate Banking in Peterborough, Ontario. Libby never married but had a long and mutually rewarding relationship with Ross Smith of Peterborough and Port Hope, where she moved after her retirement from TD Bank. There were many happy memories of the Lake House on Buckhorn Lake, Toronto Harbour Square, the Port Hope Golf and Country Club and Florida. These were cut short by Ross’s untimely death in 2011. Libby also enjoyed spending time at the Orovan Family cottage on Otter Lake in eastern Ontario, where she spent many summers as a child and visited regularly over many years with family and friends. Libby made and maintained many close friendships from her years in Brockville, Peterborough and Port Hope, including Pat Bennett, who provided outstanding love and support the past few years. Libby’s later years were supported by a strong relationship with her nephew Cameron Orovan and his partner Giovanni Piza, who assisted her in countless ways especially during her final chronic illness, which she bore with courage and demonstrated a tremendous will to live. She will be remembered fondly by all whose paths she crossed! A funeral service will be held at The Ross Funeral Chapel, 135 Walton St. Port Hope Ontario L1A 1N4 on Friday July 4, 2025 at 1 p.m. with visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
