I had the pleasure of having "Mr. Mathews" as we called him for grade 7 ecology at Richmond Regional Highschool in 1990-91. It was his retirement year. At first he seemed hard to please, but eventually I won him over :). Mr. Mathews was a teacher that expected great effort and quality from his students, the best that they could give. While I ultimately dreaded if I would be able to succeed under his standards, it ended up being my highest graded class with over a 90% on my final grade. The definitions of science words I learned that year are still embedded deep into my brain - words like "diffusion."
The teachers that push us are the ones we learn the most from. On our last day of class, he spent the time just sharing life wisdom with us - little things like the diffierence in paying for quality, and the difference in quality of more expensive domestically produced items like pencils, vs the cheap import stuff. I only had him one year, but I will never forget him.
